RESOLVE: A Regional Call To Action 1/1/2008 1. Zap Phantom Loads Phantom loads refer to the steady loads in electronic devices that consume electricity out of sight, out of mind while the devices are supposedly turned off. According to the Department of Energy's website, "[i]n the average home, 75% of the electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off." Here are a few simple ways to zap phantom loads: Plug a device into a switch-controlled outlet and turn it on and off at the wall switch. Unplug appliances like coffee makers, microwaves, and toasters when not in use. Plug multiple devices into a power strip and use the power strip switch to turn the power on and off. Zap phantom loads, a better energy solution! 2. Switch to CFLs Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) entered the energy stage in the early 1980's and are finally gaining widespread acceptance. They use 75% less energy than incandescents and last up to ten times longer. That means you'll spend less to light your home when you switch to CFLs, and you'll change your bulbs a lot less frequently. CFLs come in many shapes and sizes, cost a lot less than they did a few years ago, and usually provide light quickly. Dimmable and three-way bulbs are also available. Click here and here for more information. Switch to CFLs, a better energy solution! 3. Reduce Peak Loads Peak loads refer to those times when electricity consumers are using the most power. Some utility companies and cooperatives offer automated ways for residential customers to conserve energy during peak usage times. Switches installed on hot water heaters and/or air conditioning units can be activated automatically during those times, shutting off the units for brief periods that should not cause inconvenience. Contact your electric service provider to determine whether it offers a load management program, and if it does, consider enrolling. Switches can usually be installed year-round, weather permitting.
